Few studies have looked or presented the meaning of music performance anxiety from the viewpoint of young musician´s. Whereas most of the studies conducted were quantitative, this study used qualitative approach of phenomenology. The aim of this study was to investigate the experience of young musicians dealing with higher amount of music performance anxiety in clinical music therapy group. An experienced singer learned Stravinsky’s Ricercar 1, for soprano and small instrumental ensemble for public performance and annotated copies of the score to indicate the location of musical features that she attended to during practice and performance cues that she attended to during performance. During the next five years, she wrote out the words and music from memory six times. Recall was initially perfect, but declined over time as portions of the piece were progressively forgotten. Performing a piece of music involves the interplay of several cognitive and motor processes and requires extensive training to achieve a high skill level. However, even professional musicians commit errors occasionally. Previous event-related potential (ERP) studies have investigated the neurophysiological correlates of pitch errors during piano performance, and reported pre-error negativity already occurring approximately 70–100 ms before the error had been committed and audible. How might music teachers help their students cope with the anxiety-provoking aspects of public performance? This article aims to provide some elements to answer this question. It is important to consider that public performance is one of the main aspects of musical practice from the start of the learning process. Given the high prevalence of music performance anxiety—MPA among musicians of all levels and ages, the teacher has an important role. Based on a literature review, the sources of MPA are analyzed and, for each of them, strategies that could be used by a music teacher are indicated. Emphasis is placed on prevention and on the importance of raising music teachers’ awareness of MPA.

Mental practice in music memorization - an ecological-empirical study

Mental Practice (MP) refers to a complex network of strategies for improving musical performance without physically performing at the instrument. The present study represents an attempt to describe cross-individual differences in the use of different MP strategies, allowing direct predictions on which strategies are more likely to be effective. Sixteen pianists were studied while memorizing piano pieces. Bodily gestures in music performance play an important role in the perception and appreciation of music by the audience. Performance variations can be identified by observers even when no auditory cues are available; visual kinematic information has been demonstrated to be crucial in identifying expressive intentions. The current thesis explores violin dyads performing an unfamiliar song. High quality optical motion capture was employed to record full body movement.
